For many applications, there are standardised specifications that must be taken into account for every application. With a safety relay, a small safety control unit and a fail-safe programmable logic controller (F-PLC) such as the failsafe SIMATIC S7-1200F, there are generally three options to choose from that are suitable for these purposes, depending on the scope. While a safety relay is suitable for safeguarding individual, simple safety functions, an F-PLC is a very complex tool that requires in-depth expertise.
The small safety controllers are located in between. Unlike a safety relay, they can monitor a number of safety functions. However, thanks to graphical parameterisation, setting them is much easier than programming a fail-safe PLC.
For this reason, the safety control unit is suitable for a wide range of applications and in many cases the best solution for your needs! Below you will find an informative overview of the differences at a glance:

The control of machines and systems is becoming ever more complex and therefore places ever greater demands on the safety of people and machines. The numerous standards and directives are often perceived as complicated – but with the support of a safe small control unit, it doesn't have to be that way!
The samos PRO COMPACT series from Wieland Electric is a simple and cost-effective option for protecting medium-sized machines. Below you will find a practical overview of the individual modules in the series.
Base unit with or without Ethernet connection
Industrial Ethernet protocols PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP already integrated in some base unit models
Small space requirement of 45 mm for base unit
Networkability with higher-level fieldbus systems
Processing of analogue values possible
24 I/Os integrated in base unit with expansion option as required
Wide temperature range from -25°C to +65°C
Fig. 2: Base unit of the samos PRO COMPACT small safety control unit with or without Ethernet interface
As the main module, the samos PRO base unit forms the centre of the system and must be available (at least) once for each application and equipped with the appropriate Wieland Pro SD memory card. Thanks to the modular design, additional components can be connected here if required. This means that a high level of expandability for large systems or future system conversions has already been taken into account.
The base unit with Ethernet connection is characterised by the integration of leading Industrial Ethernet protocols, including PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP, which enables seamless communication and integration into existing systems. A particularly price-sensitive alternative without an Ethernet connection is also available. With a contact rating capacity f 4 A on each output pair, it also offers a solid platform for controlling and monitoring a wide range of machines and processes.
Despite its powerful functions, the safety control unit is housed in a compact housing just 45 mm wide. This space saving is particularly advantageous in environments with limited space and enables efficient utilisation of the available space in switch cabinets and control panels.
With 24 safe inputs and outputs, the system offers a comprehensive safety solution that enables precise control and monitoring of various safety functions. It has been designed to operate reliably in extreme temperatures from -25°C to +65°C, covering a wide range of applications and ensuring continuous operational readiness.
Parameterisation of the safety control unit is extremely flexible and can be carried out via various interfaces, including mini-USB, Ethernet and a removable SD memory card. This versatility enables easy customisation to specific requirements and applications as well as the option to change your configuration.
Installation is effortless using terminal blocks with screw or push-in terminals, ensuring a fast and reliable connection. In addition, integrated LEDs enable uncomplicated on-site diagnostics, while the remote access function via Ethernet interfaces enables efficient remote diagnostics and maintenance to minimise downtime and maximise productivity.

Analogue and digital expansion modules available
Various analogue input modules for reading 0/4-20mA or RTD signals
As samos PRO has a modular design, expansion and customisation to meet individual requirements is particularly simple and efficient. Expansion modules are available to ensure that the number of inputs and outputs can always be flexibly adapted to the existing requirements.
Analogue modules make it possible to connect additional analogue sensors, which covers a wide range of applications and enables precise measurement and monitoring of various physical variables. This flexibility makes it possible to adapt the system to the specific requirements of your installation, creating a customised solution.
Parameterisation of the analogue modules is simple and intuitive thanks to application-specific, TÜV-certified function blocks. This makes it easy to define limits, areas, ratios and differences in order to precisely monitor safety-relevant parameters and trigger appropriate actions as required. These certified modules offer an additional level of safety and guarantee reliable functionality in accordance with the applicable safety standards.
The digital modules also enable the seamless expansion of the samos PRO safety control unit with additional inputs and outputs, significantly increasing the capacity and versatility of the system. With the option of adding up to 12 digital I/O modules, the digital modules offer a scalable solution that can be customised to the specific requirements of different applications. The performance of the digital expansion modules is particularly evident in their high capacity for safe inputs and outputs. With up to 116 safe inputs and 56 safe outputs, they offer a comprehensive solution for controlling and monitoring a wide range of safety functions and processes.
The flexibility of the digital modules is also reflected in their ease of use and installation. Thanks to their compact design and intuitive configuration, they can also be easily integrated into existing systems so that they can be expanded as required.
Connection to various communication protocols
Support for CANopen, PROFIBUS and EtherCAT
Up to 2 external communication modules can be used
Fig. 4: samos PRO COMPACT communication modules
In addition to the already integrated protocols, the communication modules enable the integration of further protocols such as CANopen, PROFIBUS and EtherCAT, which enables flexible integration into various system architectures. The parallel use of up to two external and one internal gateway offers a scalable solution that can be adapted to the specific requirements and protocols of different applications.
The simple installation of the communication modules enables quick integration into existing safety systems and uncomplicated commissioning. This means that the samos PRO COMPACT small safety control unit can be customised to suit your requirements.

The samos PLAN 6 software is licence-free and ensures easy use of the samos PRO safety control unit in its full capacity.
The software is particularly easy to use thanks to the drag & drop function. The modules can be parameterised quickly and easily without the need for in-depth know-how for lengthy programming.
The TÜV-certified libraries offer over 65 function modules that are specially tailored to your applications. Special libraries for analogue value processing, muting and pressing are also available. This makes the verification and validation of your safety solution easier than ever, as the software has an oscilloscope function in both offline and online mode, which enables a quick check.
For particularly uncomplicated documentation, samos PLAN 6 also offers an automatic and configurable documentation function at the touch of a button. So you can be sure that all the necessary documents can be created quickly and easily.
The remote diagnostics option is another important feature, as this function allows users to remotely monitor and diagnose the status and performance of the safety control unit and connected devices. This ensures efficient maintenance and troubleshooting, which contributes to minimised downtimes.
